No time for gravitas this week. Thus I go to see “Trainwreck’ and thoroughly enjoy it despite the fact it’s a bit of a mess of a movie. Has all the main ingredients of a Hollywood flick; happy end guaranteed, funny sidekicks, flawed hero (in this case heroine) redeemed. Not too much thinking required. It’s predictable and safe.
More on “Poldark”. I’m in the habit of reading weekly recaps in the NYT and WSJ. I love how different they are from the recaps of the more meaty shows like “Mad Men”. They adopt a slightly (or maybe more than slightly) mocking tone that makes me smile. Plot lines lifted from Jane Austen (“Persuasion”) are identified for the viewers.
Aidan Turner looks closer to the book jacket depiction of Ross Poldark than Robin Ellis did in the paperback that I picked up years ago when I was still a teenager. The word “swashbuckling” comes to mind.
