Is Brody just another married man on the make? I’m halfway through season 1 of “Homeland”. It doesn’t quite have the same pull for me as “Justified” or “Top of the Lake”. Maybe this is why I pay attention to the is it a relationship or not angle.

Carrie says that she had an epiphany that she will always be alone. Smart and calculating, but in Dylan’s words “just like a woman” when attraction to Brody plays on her emotions. And he doesn’t even listen to Miles Davis. Carrie is in her own world, much more so than Brody. She is a difficult woman. Men are not built to have more than temporary encounters with difficult women.

“Homeland” already seems a bit dated, even it depicts a relatively recent time. I saw the pilot of “Prisoners of War”. “Homeland” is slick and polished in comparison. The core story is the same – coming home changed, finding a changed home.

Epiphany, self-awareness, whatever you call it, it’s ironic that the character in “Homeland” who has mental illness has the insight that the so-called normal characters lack.
